ESP32-P4 v3.2 Silicon: Why Kode Dot Upgraded to the Newest Revision

Kode Dot is a pocket-size, open-source device for makers, hackers and geeks: a handheld you can program, extend with modules and use to talk to the electronics around you. It was funded on Kickstarter and is working its way from prototype to production.

Not every stretch of a hardware project is photogenic. These two weeks were about lead times, component distributors and manufacturers; the unglamorous work that actually gets a product finished. But buried in the middle of it is a decision that, if you are into electronics, you are going to love.

The newest ESP32-P4 silicon: ESP32-P4NRW32X, rev v3.2

After weeks of conversations with component distributors and manufacturers, Arrow, Espressif and others, we made a call we are really happy with: the Kode Dot is moving to the latest ESP32-P4 silicon, the new v3.x revision. The exact part is the ESP32-P4NRW32X, rev v3.2.

Part of the reason is practical. Espressif is phasing out the revision we were using and is officially telling every team in development or production to move to v3.x.

The other part is that the new silicon is simply better. It pushes the dual-core RISC-V up to 400 MHz, improves the multimedia blocks, ISP and PPA, strengthens the security blocks and fixes a handful of known issues from the older revision.

But the real reason is our philosophy. We want the Kode Dot to stay current and supported for years, so a community can grow around it for the long run. Shipping a chip that is about to go end-of-life would go against everything we are building.

Raw PCBs go on the line next week

The other big step: next week the raw boards go on the line at Versa, and we will be there for the first bring-up, cameras in hand. Expect proper behind-the-scenes footage of the first boards coming together.

Getting here is exactly what the last two weeks of supplier and lead-time management were for. From this point on, the project gets visual.
