Meet Kody: The Kode Mascot and the Final Kode Dot Design

Kode Dot is a pocket-size, open-source device for makers, hackers and geeks: a handheld you can program, extend with snap-on modules and use to talk to the electronics around you. It was funded on Kickstarter and is now moving into production.

Most of our updates are about hardware. This one is about the other half of the product: the identity. Early on we decided that if the device has to be the best we can build, the brand around it deserves the same bar.

So we teamed up with two studios: Rubio y del Amo for the branding and SK-PD for the industrial design. This is what those months of work turned into.

Meet Kody, the new face of Kode

We reworked Kode from the ground up: new colors, a new identity and a new face to go with it. That face is Kody, a small blue hamster and the character that will represent everything we are building together.

This is not a fresh coat of paint. It is the identity we want to build this community around for years to come, and it already runs deep: in the new renders Kody lives right on the Kode Dot screen.

The final Kode Dot design

Alongside the brand, we closed the industrial design with SK-PD. This is the final design of the Kode Dot: the exact device shipping to backers, with everything you unlocked during the campaign packed inside. No renders-only surprises this time; this is the real thing.

One note on editions: the images show the Kode Dot in white, but the transparent edition is exactly the same device, just with a see-through case.

The brand video

A logo on a slide tells you very little, so we put the new identity in motion, Kody included. This is what months of branding work look like at full speed; a few minutes well spent.

The same identity powers the site you are reading right now: kode.diy relaunched with the new look the very same day.

Meanwhile, on the hardware bench

The rebrand never paused the engineering. While the studios closed the identity, the final-design PCBs came back from fabrication, assembled and running at 100%.

The bar has not moved since day one: the device that ships has to be the best one we can possibly build. Now it has a face, a color palette and a final design that live up to that promise, and both editions are available for pre-order while production continues.
